Ā What's New for the 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

For several decades, the Toyota 4Runner has maintained its solid appeal among SUV shoppers. It is rightfully known for balancing creature comforts and style with strong capabilities. The 2022 4Runner is a mid-generational model. While most aspects of the 4Runner are unchanged from the previous model year, there is one notable update. For 2022, the TRD Sport trim level is introduced. This trim will be a mid-level option among eight possible trim levels. It has many of the same mechanical features as the top-of-the-line TRD Pro. These include a KDSS suspension system, four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, and a locking rear differential. The TRD Pro is also defined by heated front seats, simulated leather material, a hood scoop, and TRD-specific interior accents.

The TRD Pro and all other trim levels for 2022 are outfitted with a V6, 4.0-liter engine. This is mated with a five-speed auto transmission to give you 270 horsepower. Depending on the trim level, the 4Runner comes with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Select trims have off-road driving settings, a locking rear differential, and other advanced mechanical features.

The exterior style of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner has not changed. This is a tall and boxy SUV with strong accents and features. For example, the downturned grille has a thick, horizontal bar that gives the front end its powerful character. A longer bar runs across the front bumper, holding a pair of rounded foglights. The 4 Runner’s headlights point inward to draw attention to the grille’s shape. The roofline remains tall throughout its length and capped by roof rails.

The 4Runner’s features for 2022 are comparable to those offered in the 2021 version. These features include a power rear window, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a rear power outlet, a standard or JBL sound system, leather or simulated leather material, a sunroof, an auto-dimming rear mirror, heated front seats, a keyless engine starter, keyless entry and an available third row of seats.

1. Cargo and load capacity limited by weight and distribution. Always properly secure cargo and cargo area.
2. Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up and loaded properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner's Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on base curb weight plus the total weight of any cargo, occupants, and added vehicle equipment. ā€œAdded vehicle equipmentā€ includes additional standard/optional equipment and accessories added by the manufacturer, dealers, and/or vehicle owners. The only way to be certain of your vehicle’s exact curb weight is to weigh your vehicle without passengers or cargo. [Calculated with the new SAE J2807 method.] Installation of a tow hitch receiver or other accessories located near the rear bumper or side-door kick sensors may require disabling or removing the kick sensor, and the sensor operation setting in your vehicle should be turned off. See Owner's Manual for limitations.
